Saturday, Day 98 - Apr 14 - Cruising the Atlantic Ocean

We rocked and rolled all night with all sorts of moans and groans from the ship. The boys (our travel mates) clung to their bed belts! The sea is even more active this morning than yesterday and last night. It is not looking good for our next port.

We go to breakfast and then on to our usual activities. Terry is speaking at 10AM on “Napoleon in Exile - Death on “The Rock” Imprisonment in the South Atlantic.” Dick goes and really enjoys his talk. Don Walsh is speaking at 11AM on “The Plastic Ocean” but this doesn’t appeal, so Dick skips this one. Carolyn goes to Quilling with Sarah and makes a really pretty card. Everyone likes this one.

The dining room has French onion soup and BLTs so Dick joins Carolyn for lunch there. The Captain comes on the PA and announces that Tristan da Cunha is a no go as the seas are just getting worse...which we all had already figured out. Instead, we will go north of the island and hopefully get out of the worst of the gale situation. We still have mounting seas with swells of 14 to15 feet and 30 knots of wind. There is over 13,000 feet of ocean below us. It is another beautiful day...sapphire seas, blue, sunny skies and a pleasant temperature outside...just rough as a cob!
The cake showing Singapore to staring across the South Atlantic.
Dick skips the afternoon talk by Michael Scott on, you guessed it, “More Seabirds, Whales and Dolphins We Might Spot” and spends the afternoon playing on the computer and Carolyn goes to cards with Julie. It is another full class today. If you don’t get there on time you are out of luck again today. She had to turn three people away. We make an easy sailboat card. With all the new people we are having lots of fun just talking and Julie has to work to keep us on task!

The Seven Seas Society Party is at 6PM. We are suppose to be introduced as having made Platinum (over 200 days with Regent) with this cruise (our second) but we request to skip the introduction. It is not our cup of tea. We choose our cruises based on the best deal for the itinerary we want to do and are not loyal to just one brand. Instead, we try to go to one of the bars for a drink. Usually, on the SSS party night the bars are empty but they are all standing room only tonight! Guess the rest of the ship skipped the program also, another difference in this group.

The Chief Engineer has invited us to join him for dinner tonight at 7PM. He has a table for five. We have a nice dinner with him, but Dick really has to be careful with what he says. The other couple is at the other end of the political spectrum from us.

The Showtime program is a vocalist, Nick Page, doing a mix of casual and contemporary songs. This doesn’t even temp Carolyn  and the ship is really moving around so we enjoy reading in bed again tonight. Plus we move the clock back another hour!
