Tuesday, Day 4 - Jan. 9 - At Sea

We were warned last night that it was going to be rough and rainy once we got our to sea. All the outside doors were closed off last night.

The Captain was right. Today the sea is running 3 to 4 (12 to 16 ft) meters with occasionally waves to 5 meters (20 ft). The winds are 30 to 40 knots with rain squalls. The sea bottom is 13,000 ft below us. We are having quite a ride!!! Noon location 31:15.98N by 122:05.73W. We have traveled 280 miles.

Once the room cooled down we slept very well in the comfortable bed. It is raining as we go to breakfast. Dick has oatmeal and smoked salmon and Carolyn has Eggs Benedict. Dick heads to the 10AM lecture on the sinking of the cruiser  Indianapolis and Carolyn goes back to the cabin to try to put some things away. It is like a three ring circus for a while as the coffee table is moved out and a dining room chair is brought in....much better! They also set the bar up and change out the drinks and the duvet.  The room is much more comfortable for us now, but putting things away is a lost cause as there is too much rocking and rolling. Carolyn gives up and makes her way to the Cruise Critic Meet and Mingle in the Starz Lounge outside the theater. There are maybe 12 of the 15 plus who signed up...Dick is missing because he is at the lecture. The staff set up a nice snack table and, of course, they are serving drinks. Jamie, the Cruise Director (CD), and Dana, his wife and assistant CD are there for the whole time to visit. There are also a few other staff members at first. The ship is really moving and by the time the meeting is over the food offerings have been mostly dumped on the floor behind us. The bar is having a problem with glasses going airborne also.

Carefully making her way back to our cabin Carolyn finds Dick already there. We are on deck six of 12 decks so are fairly close to the water line as cruise ships go. As we look out the balcony door we have a bone jarring crash and green water, not just spray, but green water covers the glass! Shades of the Drake Shake! Carolyn realizes she should have done her Dramamine prep for rough water but forgot!  Too late now...after being relieved of her breakfast she slaps on a patch and goes to bed. Dick soon joins her. The ship is really moving too much to risk a fall. But it is perfect for a long afternoon nap!
The patch pretty much knocks Carolyn out, but Dick gets up and goes for cocktails in the Navigator Lounge and really enjoys the piano player, Clive, in an almost empty bar. Carolyn orders room service and watches a movie. Dick goes to the Compass Rose where he is seated with people we met at the hotel. He has grilled lamb chops that he says are delicious. There are very few people dining out tonight. Earlier, Jamie announced that the evening line up is being changed due to the rough seas. The show and block party will be done another night when things calm down. Tomorrow the seas are supposed to calm some, but tonight sleeping is great!
